Editing: What We Do for You

Every great story deserves to shine. We at Green Ferns are excited to announce we are now offering editing in our a la carte services designed specifically for fiction authors. We can help strengthen your plot, deepen your characters, refine your prose, and polish your grammar, all while preserving your voice and vision. It is our goal to collaboratively work with you to elevate your storytelling to a professional level.

Our current rates for editing are as follows: 

Developmental edits ($0.05 per word): Big-picture concerns focused on structure, plot arcs, pacing, character development, organization, continuity, genre and reader expectations.

• An in‑depth personalized style sheet 
• margin notes addressing the manuscript’s structure, clarity, strengths, and where improvement is needed
• A follow up with the changes until manuscript content is complete

Line and copy edits: ($0.05 per word) Sentence‑level and grammar for flow, clarity, voice consistency, flow/transitions, and stylistic refinement to polished language while preserving the author’s tone. This also includes grammar, usage, punctuation, and adherence to Chicago style. 

• A fully corrected manuscript ready for proofreading that is clean, consistent, error‑free, and style‑compliant
• A follow up with the changes until manuscript content is complete

The full editing package deal ($0.08 per word): developmental and copy edits—all the above at a discounted price. We would love to see your book from start to finish.  

Copy edit Lite: ($0.03 per word): This is our budget friendly option of a copy edit intended to be a quicker pass to catch common mistakes future readers would notice. It is for manuscripts that have been self-edited or edited by a non professional but need a set of eyes beyond a proofread (manuscripts that are heavy lifts can be rejected for this process/price). It still focuses on sentence‑level and grammar, mainly punctuation, word choice, and clarity, while preserving the author’s tone. 

We have a team of editor humans, led by a human editor-in-chief, and do not rely on generative AI for our services. We expect the same, so we are not the company for you if you are looking for someone to rewrite and “humanize” an AI generated manuscript. Our editors are probably not the best fit for children’s or middle grade categories, poetry, screenplays, or nonfiction that use references/sources. When it comes to genres, we are not the right team for graphic horror, erotica, or hard sci-fi.

Timing: Because we use human editors, the timing varies and is dependent upon the editor and how quickly the author can get to the feedback, but typically 2-4 weeks for one editing service. There also may be a wait list to ensure every author who desires our service is given ample time.
